Beauty Influencers are Choosing Poly Gel over Acrylic and Gel: Here’s Why

Poly Gel is soooo hot on the beauty scene at the moment—and for good reason.

Made from the best qualities of both acrylic and gel formulas, poly gel is the hybrid must-have you’ve been dreaming of. Here are some of the reasons industry influencers are ditching traditional acrylics or gel and opting for the newbie on the beauty block—poly gel!

Longevity and Quality

Poly gel is lighter on the nail and more flexible than acrylic. It’s also a lot more durable than gel. Need we say more? Probs not, but we will.

Acrylic nails have a lot to offer in terms of longevity—lasting up to 4 weeks. Done properly, a gel mani can last up to 2 weeks. That’s if it doesn’t peel off (or you eat if off) within the first 24 hours. Done well, a poly gel mani should last about three weeks.

Additionally, while acrylics are known for their rather pungent scent, poly gel has little to no fragrance!

If you’re a busy babe who just aint got the time for keeping up with various beauty appointments, poly gel is for you. Say hello to a fresh set of claws done from the couch.

Without a doubt, there would be a few ballsy babes out there who have tried doing their own acrylics or using a dipping system at home.

Mostly though, acrylics are done in a salon by a nail professional during business hours. The real beauty of poly gel is that you can achieve a professional-looking set of nails from the comfort of your own home, in your own time.

We aren’t going to bullshit you. For most people, it does take a few attempts to master your poly gel technique. But once you’ve got it, we promise you’ll never look back. Our advice: just be patient, babe. You’re learning a new skill and practise makes perfect.

Removal Process

The removal process for both acrylics and gel can be a bit of a nightmare, typically involving soaking your nails in acetone leaving the nails weak and dry. Poly gel is easily removed by buffing it down with a 150-180 grit file or a nail drill if you’re kinda fancy.

Poly gel can be used as an overlay over your natural nails (filed down to where your natural nails ends) or as an extension (using either dual forms or in conjunction with nail tips). You can file them down to whatever size and shape your heart desires.

If you’re like us and get super-dooper long nails at the salon and regret it by the time you’ve started the car because you’ve just knocked your nails for the 10th time and are now in bloody agony… we’ve got you. As you’ll be doing your own nails, you can go big and then file them down to a suitable length and shape when reality sets in.

Another awesome bonus is that you can paint over them with any kind of polish you please. If your go-to red shade will forever be Essie’s ‘A-List,’ we hear ya! Opt for a neutral, white or clear poly gel and paint right over it!
